Funnily enough, the translation itself was finished literally years ago. They subcontracted a popular fan translator to do a lot of the job, and he made pretty good time. I don't know what took JAST so long, but it wasn't the translation.

I don't know the particular details of the plot but I imagine you should at least clear the "Aselia" route of Eien no Aselia as this game actually works based on the assumption that was the canon end.

Can't say what else in particular you "need" to know from Aselia though, since I'm pretty sure this game takes place in a different world than the first game. I guess there's the obvious benefits of being acquainted on the truth about Eternity Swords, their wielders and who the main "good guys" and "bad guys" were in that game.

If you want a little summary of the first game you can watch the 2 ova/episode(anime) of eien no aselia although the said anime covers the almost the entire prologue only since the video was to promote the game..

And i always get connection timeout or network error when im at 60% something.

First rename the folder you have the game in, then clean your PC with CCleaner, especially the registry. After that it should run again.
I had this problem after switching to fullscreen and back by chance.
